    NOVA SCOTIA HONEYBEE FRIENDLY SPRING FLOWERS - Make your yard bee friendly

    Did you know that just as we have favorite foods, so do the bees?  There are specific flowers, herbs and colors that attract bees. Using three seasons of growth (Spring, Summer and Fall), we can tailor our gardens to ensure the honeybees have adequate and appealing forage throughout their active period.

    Please remember that the chart below does not cover every flower or plant, and is provided as a guideline.  (It’s what we will be planting as well).  HRM is considered to be in plant hardiness zone 6a/6b.

     

    These flowers are considered Spring Bloomers and are the first ones the honeybees will forage from after a long winter:

     

    CROCUS.

    Zone: 3.4.5.6.7.8

    Plant: Oct or Nov

    Sun:  Full or Part

    Blooms :  spring

    Height :  2 to 6 inches

     

    HYACINTH

    Zone: 4.5.6.7.8

    Plant: fall

    Sun:  full or part sun

    Blooms :  spring

    Height :  6 to 12 inches

     

    BORAGE

    Zone: 3,4,5,6,7,8,9

    Plant: all seasons

    Sun:  full sun

    Blooms :  spring, summer and fall 

    Height :  1 to 3 feet

     

    CALENDULA

    Zone:

    Plant: early spring

    Sun:  part sun

    Blooms :  spring and summer 

    Height :  1 to 3 feet

     

    LILAC

    Zone: 3,4,5,6,7

    Plant: spring

    Sun:  part sun

    Blooms :  spring and summer

    ROSEMARY
